Gathering Activity
Each day, we start our day with an engaging activity. Sometimes, that looks like small groups working on letter formation or math manipulatives. Other times, it might be an open ended exploration time to discover within our classroom.
Circle Time
During this time we focus on learning to sit still and actively listen, learn, and participate. We update our calendar, go over letters, letter sounds, numbers, counting, update the weather, learn the days of the week and months of the year, and for the older kids, we introduce sight words. Circle time also includes reading a story together that goes along with our theme. On occasion, we also do a sharing circle where each students gets a turn to share on a specific topic. This is a whole group instruction time.
Brain Break
After sitting for a bit, we take a short brain break and get our wiggles out with a wiggle song.
Craft Time
During craft time we will do a fun activity that will go along with our theme for the week. This can include cutting, following instructions, gluing, discovering, lacing, painting, etc.
Free Time/Sensory Time
During this time, children get to socialize with their friends. They also get to use our dramatic play center, sensory bin with different materials, and a number of different engaging learning toys. When the weather is nice, we use this time to be outside.
Centers
During centers, we divide the students into smaller groups and focus on learning activities specific to their needs. Students get direct one on one instruction during this time, and this is where we focus on pre-reading skills.
Whole Group Activity/Music and Movement
We finish our day by gathering again on the carpet to play games and/or sing songs together. Music is a great tool to support what we are learning and is also where we prepare our songs to perform at Christmas and at the end of the year.
